The Narrow Sea: Barrier, Bridge and Gateway to the World: The Story of the English Channel ReviewThis is the first Peter Unwin book I've read and, having finished it today, I'm at Amazon looking for his others. This is a book written by an author at the top of his game. In terms of readbility, I would place this book somewhere in the middle between the easy-going yarn-telling of a Nathaniel's Nutmeg and headier works like Guns, Germs and Steel. The epic story of The Narrow Sea is told in crisp prose that slows down for no Caesar or Emperor. The thesis of this book is simply "the Channel matters." From the Celtic traders through Julius Caesar, William of Normandy, Philip of Spain, Napolean and Hitler, this sliver of sea has been a fulcrum of European history. One of the many things I like about this book is that its sweeping scope is punctuated with wonderful little sidebars, such as the one about the German garrison on the island of Cezembre that wouldn't surrender in 1944.
