Birds of the Beagle Channel and Cape Horn ReviewBasics: 2000, softcover, 265 pages, 129 color photos, 96 species photographed, 58 species annotated in the addendum, no range maps; English and Spanish text
This is another small photo guide produced by these authors to cover another section of the Patagonian region in South America. This guide covers the 153 birds found in the extreme tip (horn) of South America. Nearly 130 color photos illustrate 96 species of birds. The remaining less common species are briefly reviewed in an addendum.
Unlike the authors' later photo guides, the photographs are of a lower quality. Many are quite grainy and most of the birds have only one photo.
Each of the 96 photographed birds is accompanied by a few brief paragraphs covering description, range, habitat, and behavior. This text is given in both Spanish and English.
One nice feature is the inclusion of a seasonal abundance chart. A small, horizontal calendar is shown to reflect the presence, or absence, of the birds during the various months. This is handy.
This small book may be able to act as an average guide for your birding in the region, but you'll definitely want another book that offers better photos or illustrations as well as better, more descriptive text. The field guide Birds of Chile by Jaramillo and the photo guide Birds of Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, and Antarctic Peninsula by Couve and Vidal are highly recommended as alternatives.
