Eyewitness to Napoleon's Invasion of Russia ReviewThis is a magnificent account of the Grand Army and its destruction, written by an unrepentant worshiper of Napoleon Bonaparte. This was a perfect book to read in Kindle because the 19th Century English translated from 19th Century French made the going a bit rough in places - the "on-line" dictionary helped with unfamiliar terms. I found a map of Napoleon's route in and out of Russia on the Internet and used that to follow the narrative action. The non-standard transliterations and spellings of place names were a bother. But, through it all, I could hardly put the book down. I felt as if I myself had borne witness to the deaths of 180,000 soldiers, choked on the smoke of burning Moscow, and suffered frostbite in the half-frozen rivers. Despite his clear bias, I doubt if a more valuable eyewitness to these events could have been found. The author, Philip-Paul Comte de Segur, was a keen observer of people as well as events.
