Mummies of Rome ReviewUnder a lawn in Italy, a mausoleum with two ancient Romans are found. Later the narrator states that Roman corpses are rare finds. It turns out the bodies are those of mother and son.The researchers investigate the wig the mother is wearing, the milk, gold, and arsenic found in the bodies, etc. The work says most wealthy Romans were cremated, so having intact corpses was surprising.
Unfortunately, what researchers found profound was not comprehensible to my laymen's eyes. The two corpses seemed muddy; various body parts weren't distinct. The narrator raves about seeing a flower garland on one body. It just seemed like dark brown mush to me.
Further, we know a lot about Rome circa 100AD, compared to other times and places. The narrator mentions that the O at the end of the son's name reveals his gender as much as the A at the end of the mother's name. Well, if you've ever taken a Spanish class, you'd be able to conclude the same thing. Much of what was discussed was about Roman society generally, as opposed to factoids gleaned from the corpses.
Christians may be disappointed here. Many think that Romans quickly embraced that religion, but the narrator stated that at the time there were only about 10,000 Christians in Rome and Rome had hundreds of religions. The corpses are much more influenced by Ancient Egyptian religion than Christianity. I didn't have a problem with that, but those who are expecting this to praise or corroborate modern religions will be greatly disappointed.
The work had male and female interviewees. Some were Cambridge British types, but others were native Italians. (I heard that every nation has anthropologists nowadays and the issues of colonialism and stealing artefacts has died down compared to previous centuries.)
I wasn't blown away by this. (It has many cheesy reenactments as well.) However, this was decent enough. A teacher could play it in her or his Latin class to kill time.Mummies of Rome Overview
