The Frightful Dr. Shock. ReviewOh what fond memories I have of the late Dr. Shock, Philadelphia's own late night TV horror host of the 70's. I was allowed to stay up late on Saturday nights and my brother and I would be glued to our 19 inch black and white TV screen for the duration of this exciting show. Dr. Shock was the host of 'Scream In', a fantastic late night show that featured old horror films and magic and spooky fun provided by the great doctor! This is where my love of monsters and horror movies began and to this day I can think of no other who has influenced me more in my love of monsters than this man. Considering my age (7) and that the initial run of the show only lasted 13 weeks this is pretty amazing. I am so happy that my parents let me stay up to 1 am to watch this fun and spooky program. I'm sure this was due to the fact that my mother liked horror movies too!
The original run of the show was a much darker show which I really loved, but because parents complained of the scary nature of the program the show was canceled. It was soon put back on after fans complained about it being canceled. When it was reborn they added Bubbles Booth (Doreen) his daughter and removed Boris the hunchback played by Charlie (Doc's real life brother). I continued to watch the show for the next 10 years, but it was really never the same for me, even though this was not Bubble's fault, she was added to make the show more child friendly. Since it came on at 10 or 11 PM why should they make it more children friendly? The network changed its time slot to weekend afternoons and the title changed to Horror Theater and Mad Theater. Anyone who grew up watching Chiller Theater and Creature Double Feature probably saw this format of the show.
I had searched for footage of this show for years and found Dr. Shock's daughter through the internet by chance. I wrote her to see if she had any footage of the show or pictures. She didn't at the time, but asked me to keep in touch with her so that if I ever found any, to let her know. A few years later she did in fact find some footage which was actually a tribute to the her father shown on TV after the good doctor's untimely death in his early 40's. The DVD she sent me had the opening of 'Scream In' and plenty of footage from Scream - In, Horror Theater and Mad Theater....I was thrilled!
I'm sure this book is going to please fans of this gifted performer who influenced every monster kid of the 60's and 70's in the tri-state area. The book is filled with information about Doc's beginnings long before and after the shows cancelation. It's loaded with pictures of Dr. Shock and Bubbles (his daughter), TV ads, promos and more. The soft cover book has a memorable color picture of Dr. Shock and Bubbles on the cover. The book is long overdue to pay some respect to a man who did so much not only for TV, but for charity and the people he called his freinds and family. From what I've been told by people who knew him he was a very kind and generous person! I wish I had gotten the chance to meet him.
My hat is off to the people who made this book possible and to the late great Dr.Shock for making my youth a wonderful and imaginative place!
