if you want a baby Go to bed with an old Guernsey man ReviewI was searching for another book with "Guernsey" in the title, and saw this one. Though I'd never heard of the book or the author, the story line sounded worth the gamble of the small price. I was hooked from the beginning. Pierre could be any of us at 70 - a few health issues, but still sharp, and yet his family is ready to put him in a "oldies home". The plans he makes are clever, and I found myself laughing out loud at some of his exploits. He outsmarts his children, finds companionship, and has a LOT of fun. He really lives life to the fullest, right up to the very end.
I won't give any more of the plot - you must read it yourself. There are some minor typos and grammar issues, but not that detract from this fun story. You really have to meet Pierre for yourself!if you want a baby Go to bed with an old Guernsey man OverviewThis book has an “edge" right through the story as the main player, Pierre Le Poidevin, naturally opposes power such as the police, immigration, customs and headmasters.Pierre Le Poidevin was born in Guernsey, the Channels islands and was evacuated just before the German forces arrived on the island in 1940 which means he is old. He returns to Guernsey after the war and has a successful life but is now retired and a widower.Then to his horror, on listening in on a telephone call he hears that his family is secretly planning to put him in an old folk's home. He starts preparations to do a runner to far away lands.Tidying himself up, hiding his wealth all over the place, breaking into family computers, practicing living alone by bicycling along French canal paths; he is nearly ready to go.After the family put him in an old folks home he does a runner with some of his wealth, meets new women with consequences, makes his way to London and ultimately to Brazil before being discovered and returning to Guernsey.So many missing pieces, so much humour, some frolicking at 70 and a little sadness.
