Getting Right with Tao: A Contemporary Spin on the Tao Te Ching ReviewNo, this is not the Tao Te Ching (or Daodejing for you hardcore enthusiasts). What it is, though, is Mr. Hogan's take on what the Tao Te Ching means.
Imagine Quentin Tarantino or the Beach Boys writing a version of the Tao Te Ching and you have Getting Right with Tao.
This is a modern interpretation, not a scholastic translation, and in a world full of translations from academics and poets Mr. Hogan's take makes greatly needed sense out of a timeless classic. Chinese is hard enough to understand...English translations shouldn't be hard to understand either.
For Mr. Hogan to go from the literal Chinese-to-English translation of the opening of the Tao Te Ching ("Tao can Tao not true Tao") to "If you can talk about it, it ain't Tao" shows his ability to transmit the SPIRIT of the Tao Te Ching, rather than the LETTER, to the reader; an ability unfortunately lost on the more academic authors on the subject.
As someone who printed Mr. Hogan's original PDF file and cut and bound a primitive and private copy of the original work years ago, I am very excited that Getting Right with Tao is finally out in official print. This book would make an excellent addition to any library.Getting Right with Tao: A Contemporary Spin on the Tao Te Ching OverviewA decade in the making, Ron Hogan's Getting Right with Tao conveys the essence of the Tao Te Ching but with a modern, self-aware sensibility. The original pragmatic treatise on personal development gets a contemporary, Tarantinoesque gloss in eighty-one spare, stripped-down chapters. What does it mean to be alive? What do you want from life? With a unique voice and incisive style, Hogan gets right to what matters.
