: My Marquette: Explore the Queen City of the North-Its History, People, and Places With Native Son Tyler R. Tichelaar ReviewWhen you see My Marquette on the shelf in the bookstore, you feel compelled to pick it up and thumb through it. Then you'll really want to buy it. This meaty, 405-page book is so much more than just a guidebook of Marquette, Michigan. It is an impressive historical journey through Michigan's Upper Peninsula. As I read the book, I was awestruck by the amount of research that must have gone into its completion. And even though I was not that familiar with this part of Michigan before reading the book, I really feel like I know this place now. I'm envious of author Tyler Tichelaar for having as deep-rooted a connection to his hometown as he does. He is a 7th generation resident of Marquette. The author takes the time at the beginning of the book to explain how he first wrote his trilogy of historical fiction novels, based upon his own family tree. The remainder of the book is divided into the geographical sections of Marquette and the surrounding areas. I can't imagine that the author has left anything out. Accompanying the historical accounts and touring information are wonderful black and white photographs. My favorite section was reading about the city's historical homes and the details of the lives of the family members who lived in these great these treasures. I can just imagine how magical tours of historical homes here must be!
There is a valuable timeline in the back of the book that is sure to help out many who may be researching the area, a generous list of additional reading resources as well as an extensive index.
If you are planning a visit to this area or live nearby, or even if you just like to read about historical towns, you've got to get this book. I'm sure My Marquette will be a beneficial resource for many years to come, as author Tyler Tichelaar has obviously done years of research to compile this vast treasure of information about the Marquette area. The book has left me wondering what historical wonders I might discover in my own town.
