Sacred Marching Orders ReviewI was honored to introduce Pat at her first public signing for this book. To offer my review I share parts of my introduction.
To begin I would like to quote Henriette Mantel who sums up Pat's book when she said,
"I don't have the time every day to put on makeup. I need that time to clean my rifle."
Henriette's quote is funny and tinged with ironic menace. Accordingly, in my opinion, Pat's book urges you women to liberate yourself, cast off the shackles that have been deliberately placed on your mind, embrace your power, pull your sisters up from under the boot heel of Patriarchy, and put yourself in harm's way.
Read, or don't read, this book at your peril.
You can choose to avoid this book and its concepts and remain content with how you have been hypnotized and bludgeoned into being satisfied with the scraps that Patriarchy throws you as a woman. As Pat says, you can "Remain quiet, nice little girls who offend no one."
This would be a choice out of what Pat calls the lunar feminine. Pat points out that the lunar feminine "is not up to the task of reversing the trajectory the planet has been on under Patriarchy for the last 5,000 years."
Another cranky woman, Erica Jong, said that "Women are the only exploited group in history to have been idealized into powerlessness."
Accordingly, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley said, "Taught from infancy that beauty is woman's sceptre, the mind shapes itself to the body, and roaming around its gilt cage, only seeks to adorn its prison."
However, you can also embrace this book and its concepts, including thinking and acting out of the solar feminine. You can love and empower your own mind and life and that of your sisters, and prepare for the tsunami of punishment that Patriarchy will surely vomit onto you.
Pat warns us that, "transition is an especially challenging time because our cells carry the memories of the consequences for standing in our power. Ramifications have been dire for thousands of years--up to, and including, today. We must activate the solar feminine within us if we are to have a future."
Pat says that "we think of men as protectors, but especially under Patriarchy, 99.9% of the destruction and harm to us and the rest of the planet has been done by men."
Likewise, Estelle R. Ramey says that "Women's chains have been forged by men, not by anatomy."
Eleanor Smeal says, "Ultimately, to get equality, it's women who will have to lead the way. It's not going to be handed to us."
My last quote comes from a man - a man who was both an abolitionist and an ardent feminist of his time - Frederick Douglass.
He said,
"The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle . . . . If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are people who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters."
I commit myself, as a man and a human being who is enraged and outraged with the pestilence we know as Patriarchy, to support any woman's transition to the solar feminine. I support you because it is the right thing to do and I need you to save my Earth.
