In general, these scripts are known as the Asterisk Gateway Interface or AGI. They can take care of arbitrary instantaneous tasks in tight collaboration with Asterisk. This makes it possible to expand upon Asterisk's existing set of call handling primitives. The book explains the workings of AGI in a fair amount of detail, and gives good guidance on best practices. It shows examples to get the reader started.
The book appears to have difficulty choosing between novice and experienced audiences; the AGI topic is a specific part of Asterisk, making it add depth of knowledge, but in spite of this the first 3 chapters or 84 pages are spent explaining introductory things about Asterisk, such as detailed step-by-step installation and IVR programming.
