Oracle RMAN Pocket Reference ReviewThis book by no means replaces the (online) documentation that oracle provides, or a more complete RMAN book. But it shines when you want the syntax without carrying around a boat anchor of a book.
You need a working knowlege of RMAN for this book to be useful. If you purchase this to learn RMAN, you will be disappointed. If you know, or are learning to use RMAN, it is helpful.
I like it because I can pop it in my back (or shirt) pocket.
Half of the book is dedicated to syntax. The first half is a brief overview of the RMAN world.
It is a 'Must Have' for anyone using RMAN. But you will need other documentation in addition. I have found the Oracle supplied documentation (on CD) very good. But it is not 'portable'.Oracle RMAN Pocket Reference Overview
Oracle RMAN Pocket Reference is a handy guidefor DBAs who intend to use Oracle Recovery Managerfor database backup and recovery. Because RecoveryManager (RMAN) is a relatively new tool, many DBAsare just becoming familiar with it. They will welcomea timely book that explains clearly and concisely howto use RMAN for common backup and recovery tasks thatare infrequent, yet extremely vital.
The first portion of the book is primarily task-oriented.After a short section on RMAN architecture, the bookshows (in checklist style) how to perform common backupand recovery tasks such as:
Implementing a recovery catalog Creating and running RMAN scripts Configuring input/output channels Taking a full database backup Backing up tablespaces and datafiles Taking incremental backups Recovering lost datafiles
The second portion of the book consists of a handysyntax reference to the many RMAN commands. Havinga quick reference to RMAN commands is a greatconvenience to DBAs who otherwise, often under thepressure of a recovery situation, would have to wadethrough Oracle's online documentation.
